Psychiatry
Psychiatry is a medical discipline that deals with the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of mental disorders. Its primary goal is relief from suffering associated with mental disorders and improvement of mental health and well-being. Mental disorders comprise a broad range of conditions and are generally characterized by some combination of abnormal thoughts/ emotions/ behavior/ relationship with others. Psychiatry adopts a medical approach but may take in to account biological, psychological, and social/cultural perspectives in the management of mental disorders.
Department of Psychiatry at Government Medical College, Pali caters holistic mental health services as follows:
OPD consultation services: These services are provided daily during hospital hours. Patients suffering from different types of headaches, depressive disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, bipolar (mood) disorders, sleep disorders, various kinds of addictions (alcohol, opium, tobacco, bhang, ganja),dementia and geriatric mental health conditions, childhood behavioral disorders, intellectual disability, attention- deficit/ hyperactivity disorders are benefitted by OPD services.
Indoor services/ admission facility: Department provides admission facility and treatment for severely ill/ difficult-to-manage patients suffering from schizophrenia, manic disorder and other psychotic disorders.
Preventive/ Community awareness services: As a regional functional unit of National Mental Health Program, department conducts routine camps to periphery to provide awareness about mental health and mental disorders as well as consultation and treatment for ailments.
Certification/ welfare services: In compliance to Rights of persons’ with Disabilities Act-2016, department functions in collaboration with social welfare department to assess disabilities caused by mental disorders and to provide certificates to the needy patients.

Dr. Ankit Awasthi was awarded fellowship of Dr Ramchandra N Murthy Foundation for mental health & neurological sciences at National Institute of Mental Health & Neurosciences (NIMHANS), Bangalore for participating in Early career psychiatrists’ workshop in January 2016.
NEWS/ EVENTS
Department observed World Schizophrenia Day by organizing public awareness program addressing patients and their relatives at Bangur Hospital on 24th May 2018.
Dr. Ankit Awasthi delivered lecture on Stress Management in the orientation program for 1st batch of MBBS students of the college on 20th August 2018.
Faculty and residents of the Department delivered talk on the occasion of World Suicide prevention Day on 10th September 2018.
Various awareness activities were conducted by department during World Mental Health Week -2018.
Dr Ankit Awasthi delivered a guest lecture in a seminar on Mental health Care Act organized by Department of Psychiatry, Dr. S. N. Medical College, Jodhpur on 9th October 2018.
Department organized awareness program highlighting this year’s theme of World Mental Health Day “Young People & Mental Health in a Changing World” at Bangur Hospital on 10th October 2018.
