About the Department
Seeds of Surgical Oncology were sown at SMS Medical College Jaipur by Dr G C Sharma & Dr Wanchoo and the Department was envisioned and created by Dr Raj Govind Sharma who was the first qualified Surgical Oncologist of the State of Rajasthan. Dr G C Sharma was Former Principal & Prof. & Head of Surgery and Dr P K Wanchoo was Prof. of Surgery with training at MSKCC New York. With the active efforts of Dr Wanchoo and donation from Shri Radha Krishan Birla Family, the RKBC Cancer Detection Centre was started. Foundation stone of this was laid on 7th April 1987 by the then Chief Minister Shri Haridev Joshi. It was inaugurated on 13th of August 1988 by the then Chief Minister of Rajasthan of Shri Shiv Charan Mathur in the presence of the then Health Minister Shri Ragunath Vishnoi. This building had OPDs, Rooms for Colposcopy, and Radiology etc. Continued efforts of Dr Wanchoo and Dr H C Sethi generated more donation from the R K Birla Family which made possible extension of the building to house the Seminar hall, Rooms for Research, CytoPathology, and Registry etc. A total of 6000 Sq. Ft. built area was available. Hence this was renamed as RK Birla Cancer Centre and was inaugurated by the then Chief Minister Shri Bhairon Shingh Shekhawat in the presence of Health Minister Shri Lalit Kishore Chaturvedi on 26th of December 1991. Dedicated Surgical Oncology work was started from 1991 by Dr Raj Govind Sharma Assistant Prof. of Surgery who had MCh EquivalentThree Year Residency at Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York. In the crusade for developing Oncology facilities in Rajasthan, Dr Raj Govind Sharma was joined by Dr Hemant Malhotra then Asst. Prof. in Medicine. Dr Malhotra was trained in Medical Oncology at Tata Memorial Hospital Mumbai and Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre, New York. Joint efforts of Dr Sharma & Dr Malhotra resulted in a Grant from National Cancer Control Program which helped in construction of the Oncology Wing and Bone Marrow Transplant Centre on the first floor of the existing RK Birla Cancer Centre building. This Oncology Wing was inaugurated on 10th December 2007 by the then Chief Minister of Rajasthan Smt. Vasundhra Raje in presence of Health Minister Shri Ghanshyam Tiwari, PWD Minister Shri Rajendra Singh Rathod and Education Minister Prof. Vasudev Devnani and others. This wing contained the Surgical Oncology Operation Theatre Complex, Bone Marrow Transplant unit, Recovery and Day Care wards. Dr Raj Govind Sharma headed the Division of Surgical Oncology and got Two Posts of Senior Residents in Surgical Oncology sanctioned by Govt. of Rajasthan in 2009.
